[listening] What's On The Turntable?

Been doing some incredibly boring normalisation of data while the engineers fix the new firewall so we can actually refresh reports instead of just looking at them. Got my Essential Masters [of Jazz] playlist running on the iPod - been listening to Sidney Bechet & Charlie Christian this afternoon. I managed to track down all the jazz compilations, I am less interested in the other titles in the series.

So, it's Bandcamp Friday, and also release day for Public Service Broadcasting's The Last Flight. So if you buy a copy off Bandcamp, they get the full value of what you pay and not just a fraction.

You can also find some of their instrumental only takes there.

A bit of Crowded House on a Tuesday evening…

Just been listening to an episode of Steve Hogarth’s podcast when he was discussing just how good the Woodface album is.

Remixed and extended version of Legend, the Robin of Sherwood album

I've had Adele on repeat in my head for the last few days. It's the inspiration for my NaGaDeMon project, currently called In This Light, intended to be a little story game about meeting your ex friend/partner at a party.

This...

Which then lead to this, naturally...

I went to see Kill II This on Saturday, and it was such a fantastic gig. It has to be the first time in 20 years I've seen the band play live and I was right up the front for it. So much positive energy in the room.

Die Kur also were fantastic support act and looked liked they were really enjoying yourselves up on stage. I don't many industrial metal bands that have a violinist! Ays, the band's singer, was such a gentleman, and he made me feel very welcome. I will keep my eye out for their next gig.

Afterwards, I treated myself to a vinyl copy of Kill II This' album Variant, which I managed to get signed by Simon, Mark, and Jeff. A pity that the overzealous security guard prevented me from meeting with returning bass player Caroline, and I sadly failed to get her to sign it. I look forward seeing them again in the future.

This album by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is haunting me. Keep on coming back at it, wish it was longer than 32 mins. That will teach me not to Spofify tracks I like in films!

Electronic indie rock.

I've never ventured into this part of the Tavern before, but I thought it was time to share the story of my relationship with Spotify. You see, at my age and from my old early 90s DJing background, you would think that I would have a solid indie-rock vibe to my music. That the advanced Spotify algorithm would feed me a constant stream of Iron Maiden, Shed Seven, Metallica and the Stone Roses.

Or so you would have thought. But no. Spotify is convinced I am a late teenage, early 20s angst-ridden goth lesbian. Ignoring the constant spectre of Chappelle Roan, Charlie XCX, Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa, plus Demi Lovato's dark period, that is foisted upon me, here's a selection of some of the more persistent obscure tracks...

First off, a bit of Swedish Industrial Goth Drama....

And then some Mexican all-girl rock?

Bit of Aussie pixie rock?

And some British heavily gay-pop stuff

Gosh I'd love to be a late teenage, early 20s angst-ridden goth lesbian.
Or any kind of healthy late teenager.

That is a lot of what I listen to by choice these days. Does that make me a late teenage, early 20s angst-ridden goth lesbian trapped in a white, male and stale body?

Sure would explain a lot 🤪
