[generic] Moderation

One of the guys who used to run Reddit discusses moderation.

Excellent read, thank you.

Signal to noise ratio and spam are my key takeaways from that article.

I run the Dune RPG group and blocked a superfan of Timothee Chalamet, just because he kept trying to post photos of the actor while ignoring the whole premise of the group, which is to share role playing in the Dune universe, not ogling actors in thier private lives off set

Another thing people miss is this assumption of universality on social media platforms.

Human interactions are selective and gatekeeping is a defensive mechanism. Cue Discord App. Certain groups of people will cluster around certain servers with like-minded individuals. There is no one-size fits all. One big problem waa the delusion that some activists had that they could come in to change an insular community. I call it the vegan barbecue insurrection, no offense to vegans.

Anyway, I had a similar experience moderating 7th Sea with John Wick. I tried to tell him his ideas were good but execution suffered, yet his fanboys were all about just worshipping John Wick and demanded that harsh but fair criticism get moderated.
Guess, what,? Over 11,000 backers on his first Kickstarter but downhill ever since in public play. So we have splintered communities, but each thriving, despite the game itself in a lull.

Thought-provoking read, although he seems to be arguing that we must accept intolerance because it's too hard to filter out, and even trying just enrages someone else. Not sure where Karl Popper would stand on that one!

I'd argue that I wasn't there to read about trees, worthy topic though it is, so the tree stuff was essentially spam - noise rather than signal.

Moderation is definitely one of those topics that looks easy until you try to work out how to do it. Of course, if you're not worried about representing other points of view, it gets easier...

I became much more interested in the noise.

I took it that you were moderating behaviour more than content, so it isn't what you say, but how you say it or respond. Mind you, I was arborealy distracted.
