It looks like Amazon is using a different DRM scheme which now affects older Kindles (for those people using downloads to use on another device ). See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361503&page=91 posts dated March 8th and later.

I am so glad I switched to Kobo purchasing!

The vibe I'm taking away from all this is that the ultimate aim is to provide content as pay-per-view... Even purchased content.
 
Such a hateful business model.
I cancelled my prime recently, I cannot stand giving any more money to that cyberpunkish corp.
 
Need to download all my books onto my two old Kindle Keyboards, just cos I can..
 
Looking at Kobo more closely. But also might mop up my Amazon wishlist if they are 99p

I've been using Kobo since Amazon discontinued downloads, and I'm happy with it. You do need to use Calibre and various plug-ins but once that is set up, it's dead easy. You also need an ADE installation, but once you've installed it and configured the DEASCM plug-in, you don't need to import ASCM into ADE, and from there get the epub from Calibre; you just import the ASCM file straight into Calibre.

Using Kobo has also saved me money: if the book is cheaper on Amazon (or another competitor), you get refunded the difference plus 10% of the competitor's price. Given the number of 99p books I purchase, that has added up over the years - I've got 66 completed price matches, mostly for 99p books, but with the occasional £1.99 book. At 10p or more, that's added up.

Okay, 8h later I'm flashing it to the community OS "crosspoint"!

Mainly as it has a much better open source reader.
 
The XTEink seems to be popular. A friend of mine posted on Mastodon about getting one and flashing Crosspoint onto it too:

It arrived, and is such a neat wee device with not so great software. But that's fine, was always going to flash Crosspoint. Backup existing firmware... 16MB and it gets to 80 bytes short of 100% and fails. Repeatedly. Shades of dialup downloading in the 90s! #XTeink4

Successfully flashed Crosspoint to the XTeink4. It is _so_ much nicer than the official firmware. Fonts are much more readable, though not perfect by any means. Have we collectively forgotten how to make bitmapped fonts? Those would seem an ideal use case.

Does the he XTEink flashed with Crosspoint support Adobe DRM?
i.e. Can you buy DRM protected books from Rakuten Kobo, Google Play Books and eBooks.com and borrow library books using Libby?

I am racking up another recent tech failure, as I fail to remove KFX DRM from my downloaded Kindle library. I do have the KFX input plugin, but that doesn't seem to do the job. I'd like to move away from Amazon, but don't want to loose my books.

Any further advice welcomed!
 
To be honest, I've not tried the KFX input tool for a while, and I never really succeeded with it. I should give it another go.

You need the DeDRM plugin from GitHub: https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools

I'm currently using 10.0.2 for LCPL DRM removal, but you may like to use the 10.0.9 beta.

There may be an issue in that Amazon seem to have been jumping the gun and stealth updating Kindles with the hardened DRM already.

Yes maybe. The NoDRM replacement code is now 2-3 years old and I can't load them on my system anyway. For now, I feel like Amazon have stolen a march?
 
It still works fine for me, are using the new current forked version?
Are you using calibre since you really must.
