Now this is a long read but I can see it being the inspiration to a whole SF or weird science character/campaign.

Long read but very interesting. May even explain Dune. No aliens need to exist because with the speed of mutation and synthesis, evolution happens so rapidly, the source and final form of the same species may look alien to each other at first review, so all those aliens may just be of the same ,"once upon a time" origin, but no longer the same species at the measured mark.
 
Wasn't there an Isaac Asimov story where explorers meet, each thinks they have finally found aliens, only to realise that they are all humans who just went around the galaxy different ways, mutating as they went? (That's going to bug me now until I remember the title.)
