• The Tavern needs to be a safe place and comply with the law. In the UK the OSA requires us to know the age of our members and posters, and yet the UK Govt. has not provided a method to do this that is affordable to small voluntary BBS like ours. Literally don't understand what you are offering or how to buy it from the link @Newt

@Guvnor, @Newt has opened up a window for non-backers to jump on board and get a copy of Dr Mitch's book 'Beyond Dread Portals' which was previously kickstarted.

@Newt - I'm a backer, should I have done something with the pledge manager? I think I may have already done it a while ago (as I added Crypts and Things and that arrived a long time ago).

If the store page had a paragraph describing the product offering it would be simpler and IMHO more likely to generate sales.

I got lost and fatigued and I more or less remember the KS, respect and love the author and artist, and like the conceit. I gave up.

Run it and I will play it, someone.

Beyond Dread Portals is an exciting roleplaying game of world-hopping fantasy by Paul Mitchener (author of Liminal). The easy-to-learn rules are built from a core loosely based on the world's first fantasy roleplaying game, tailored to fit the setting.

Note: The Signed and Sent version of the book, available to the Sage reward level and upwards, is now a properly printed book with sewn pages, better quality print and a ribbon.

Step into the Worlds of Ys

At the centre of the game is the city of Ys, a baroque fantasy city which rules three different worlds. These worlds vary in nature, some being Earth-like and others less so. The empire that controlled these worlds has now been invaded and subverted by the monstrous Autarch. Life may seem normal, with Ys’s guilds and noble families scheming against each other for power, but the city, like its ruler, is becoming grotesque and decayed.

The player characters are members of the League of Explorers, hired by powerful patrons to step through magical portals into other worlds and undertake adventures on their behalf.

The Portal D20 System

At its heart, Beyond Dread Portals is a D20 Class/Level-based game with modern features.

Beyond Dread Portals uses three highly modifiable classes. Magician, Warrior and Expert. As well as a set of ability scores, each character has backgrounds, drives, and a choice of special abilities, ensuring that no two members of the same class are the same.

The core mechanic is the familiar roll over a target number on a D20, modified by applicable bonuses from backgrounds and skills. Invoking the character's drive allows a player to roll two D20s and pick the best result.

The Book

The basic goal for this campaign is to fund a rulebook for the game.

The book in all formats will be 6 in by 9 in size with approximately 300 pages, a colour front cover by Jon Hodgson, with Black and White art throughout.

There are three versions of the book.

  • A pdf that includes bookmarks, hyperlinked contents, index, and cross-references.
  • A Print on Demand (POD) hardcover.
  • A Signed and Sent version. Signed by the author and sent directly to you from me in the UK (see Fulfilment below). This is a printed version with sewn pages, better-quality paper and a ribbon.

As an existing backer, it's just an opportunity for you to buy additional add-ons, potentially driving up the total and funding stretch goals. We are about 300ish away from a full version of the Fort on the Edgelands scenario. But no one is bitting (probably for the same reasons the Guv points out).

There will be a buy-your-postage page for Signed and Sent copies. But I've not set that up yet (its a job for Monday).

I got lost and fatigued and I more or less remember the KS, respect and love the author and artist, and like the conceit. I gave up.

Thanks for pointing this out. Looks like i rolled a fumble on this, by trying to integrate a pre-order/buy additional pages into my existing web store (which along with the whole website is over due a redesign/clear out). I've tried this a couple of times, and it's always annoying to set up and confusing for customers. So I won't be doing it again. Fingers crossed that Kickstarter gets its pledge manager sorted out soon, or Backerkit is easiler (and cheaper) to use than it was last time I used it eight years ago (!)
