Beyond Dread Portals is an exciting roleplaying game of world-hopping fantasy by Paul Mitchener (author of Liminal). The easy-to-learn rules are built from a core loosely based on the world's first fantasy roleplaying game, tailored to fit the setting.
Note: The Signed and Sent version of the book, available to the Sage reward level and upwards, is now a properly printed book with sewn pages, better quality print and a ribbon.
Step into the Worlds of Ys
At the centre of the game is the city of Ys, a baroque fantasy city which rules three different worlds. These worlds vary in nature, some being Earth-like and others less so. The empire that controlled these worlds has now been invaded and subverted by the monstrous Autarch. Life may seem normal, with Ys’s guilds and noble families scheming against each other for power, but the city, like its ruler, is becoming grotesque and decayed.
The player characters are members of the League of Explorers, hired by powerful patrons to step through magical portals into other worlds and undertake adventures on their behalf.
The Portal D20 System
At its heart, Beyond Dread Portals is a D20 Class/Level-based game with modern features.
Beyond Dread Portals uses three highly modifiable classes. Magician, Warrior and Expert. As well as a set of ability scores, each character has backgrounds, drives, and a choice of special abilities, ensuring that no two members of the same class are the same.
The core mechanic is the familiar roll over a target number on a D20, modified by applicable bonuses from backgrounds and skills. Invoking the character's drive allows a player to roll two D20s and pick the best result.
