[watching] Doctor Who

Having watched every episode of Doctor Who since the RTD reboot, I gave up after Space Babies. I had no objection to the "gay thing" or the "trans thing"; it just seemed to me that it had moved into an era where the programme didn't even pay lip service to being science fiction rather than fantasy.

There’s some cracking episodes that you’re missing out on. I felt Space Babies was a massive misstep in terms of a story, and a bad opener, but there are some really good science fiction elements to look forward to during Ncuti’s two seasons.

We've just finished Peter Capaldi's first season and it's starting to lose me. To be fair, this is where it lost me last time. I love Peter Capaldi as an actor but as the Doctor he's just not cutting it for me.

I found Capaldi’s tenure to be the weakest of the revived era, with Moffat often pandering to the hardcore fans rather than trying to appeal to a wider audience. I also felt series 9 was the worst since the show returned in 2005. I’m of the opinion that Jodie Whitaker’s era was probably the best, and more on par with the classic series, with a similar feel to seasons 18 and 19, whilst appealing to a modern audience. A pity that some fans couldn’t see the forest for the trees with the casting of the first female Doctor.

Filming has taken place on 12th November at Camber Sands, East Sussex.

Paul McGann was seen wearing his Guardians of the Edge costume from Power of the Doctor, standing close to a TARDIS. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the 2026 Christmas Special - which is scheduled to start filming early next year. However, next year is the 30th anniversary of the TV Movie and it could be part of a special Blu Ray release.

Cryo-Doctor Who?*

* Perhaps only role players of a certain vintage will get that reference 😉

Happy Doctor Who Day! Today marks 62 years of our favourite television series. What will you be doing to celebrate this year's anniversary? I think we're going to watch the final serial of the classic era this evening, Survival.

Survival always got a lot of hate but I liked it. Always fancied using the Kitlings and the Cheetah people in a game.

Season 26 is by far my favourite series of the 1980s, followed closely by Season 18. I hold Curse of Fenric, Ghost Light, and Survival in very high regard. Even the weakest story, in my opinion, Battlefield, is a good one.

Fun Fact: Overall, Doctor Who was the 7th most watched programme on British television in 2005. Although it failed to make the top 10 programmes in 2006, the series was the 2nd most watched programme in 2007, just behind EastEnders, but fell to 5th place in 2008. In 2009, it had fallen back down to the 7th most watched programme and was 10th in 2010. It didn't return to the top 10 until 2013, being the 3rd most watched programme that year. The series has not featured in the top 10 since.
