[watching] Doctor Who

Darran, please read my post on ratings comparison. Doctor Who is still one of the top rated dramas on television full stop. Television ratings in general are down across the board, mainly because streaming services have gobbled up viewers. However, Power of the Doctor was number 5 in the TV chart the week it was broadcast, which goes to show that Doctor Who is still popular as ever with viewers.

I've been looking at the viewing figure data for Doctor Who to make some comparison with other big TV dramas. The final series of Peaky Blinders saw an average 5.42 million viewers over its six week run and that's pretty close to Doctor Who: Flux's average rating of 5.43 million viewers. And yet Peaky Blinders is heralded as a success, whilst Doctor Who as a failure by some because of the viewing figures. The reality is, Doctor Who is holding it's own against the big dramas.

To give you another comparison: The top drama last week was SAS Rogue Heroes. Like Power of the Doctor, it was the 5th most watched programme that week. Based on the 7-day consolidated figures, SAS Rogue Heroes had an audience of 5.62 million viewers, whereas Doctor Who had 5.29 million viewers. They're pretty close in terms of viewers, albeit Doctor Who is a much older show. These figures will likely go up once the 28-day consolidated ratings come in.

I think you are not too far apart.
Peaky Blinders is not lesser tho' eh?
IMHO neither is Doctor Who.. but the target demographics are..

Eh? Are you looking at my horse? (Murder ensues)

Strictly is also watched by a more mature audience, who are less likely to stream and record programmes.
Strictly is also a time-critical programme. If you want to vote you need to be watching in near-real-time. And you need to watch on Sunday if you want to experience the drama of the result rather than just getting the headline.

Unless we are talking an episode with major spoilers, or a season finale, few dramas have those factors to help bolster viewing figures.

The Doctor Who Magazine has revealed some news about Series 14:

"Showrunner Russell T. Davies has today confirmed that Series 14, the first series with Ncuti Gatwa as the title role, will be eight episodes long. "Okay, that's fewer episodes than the last full season. But give us time. We have plans, and that's a promise!" Davies told Doctor Who Magazine.

Accompanying the eight-episode series every year will be an annual "Christmas special". Russell reveals in Doctor Who Magazine: "For the first time ever, I'm writing a Christmas Special... at Christmas! And this isn't for next year, no, the 2023 script has been long since signed-off. The new one is for end-of-year 2024!"

Davies also addresses the extended gap of 13 months between the last episode and the first 60th Anniversary special: "It takes a while to get the empire in shape, but that's a serious plan: annual Doctor Who, no gap years, lots of content, on and on."
So it looks like we will be getting 8 episodes and a Christmas special every year.

Doctor Who and Blake's 7 writer Chris Boucher passed away a few days ago aged 79. He wrote The Face of Evil for Doctor Who, which introduced the character of Leela. His only other two stories he wrote were The Robots of Death and Image of the Fendahl. Later he went on to become script editor on Blake's 7, as well as writing nine episodes himself including the series' infamous final episode, Blake. Season 4 would never have happened with out him and he is credited for creating the characters Soolin and Slave, as well as The Scorpio ship. In 1987, he created the near-future sci-fi crime drama, Star Cops.

The final 28-day consolidated viewing figures for The Power of the Doctor have been released and it stands at 5.50 million viewers. The episode gained over 200,000 viewers after 7-days.

Are you fed up with all the rubbish about Jodie Whitaker and Chris Chibnall ruining Doctor Who like myself? This makes for some interesting reading. Based on 28 day viewing figures, the average for three seasons and specials:

Peter Capaldi average ratings: 6.39 million viewers.
Jodie Whitaker average ratings: 6.25 million viewers.

So there’s not much difference in the ratings.

I liked them both equally but in different ways.

My point was that certain toxic elements would have you believe that the ratings are down and is sign of Chibnall's incompetence as showrunner.

I got the Season 2 Blu Ray collection for Christmas. I have to say for the age of the material, being nearly 60 years old, and the fact it's black and white, they've cleaned up the footage beautifully. The picture quality is very crips and clear. Season 2 is the most complete of the 1960s seasons, with only two missing episodes. The story they're from isn't absent from this set and the two missing episodes have been reconstructed using tele-snaps and off air recordings of the soundtrack. Sadly, the decision was made not animate them.
