Contingency ConTingency 2025 (Jan 29th-Feb 2nd)

MartinP

Demi-God
Who else is heading off to Sunny Hunny next month for ConTingency? Five (or more) days of intense RPG action, plus caravans on the North Sea coast in the depths of winter and maybe some ducks.

I'm offering a whole bunch of games based on Manifold, mostly The Great Martian Tripod Race (as I'm calling my steampunk Mars game) and a magical girl game called The Schooling of Tomomi, plus some Traveller sessions and an Saturday evening session of The Great American Witch.

I'll be there for the first time, and I'm liking the jive of the event. I'm offering just one game: Warhammer Fantasy 4th Edition. I hope to play in a couple too, mooch about, sea front walks(?) and make it a bit of a writing week for our Age of Arthur new edition.

Are you going for the full Monday-to-Monday holiday experience? I'm told the storytelling evening on Tuesday is good fun, and there's always the chance to get in some pre-convention games on Monday/Tuesday. Or keep your powder dry for the main event!

I turn up in the middle of the night on Tuesday, but that's the problem of still having to work and living a stupid distance away from the venue.

I turn up on Monday and leave - er I don't actually know. I think the Sunday? I'm not sure how deeply I will submerge into the event, but will be a nice base of operations to do some writing.

I will be down there as heading with @MartinP - looks like all but one of my games are full up.

also signed up to play some games too.

Running:
Bladerunner - Left Luggage
Bladerunner - Con Te Partitò
Ghostbusters - Marston House Mystery
Ghostbusters - Overlook Labyrinth
Tales of the Old West - Stage to Vegas
Alien - Lasalle's Drifting Forest
Rivers of London - Haunted Dollhouse
Planet of the Apes - The hunt. (still spaces)

Never Stop Blowing Up - System Crash
Wild West Cinema: Kenton's Pass
SLA Industries: Their Worst Dreams

I'll be wandering down the country with @MartinP and @sanjurotokage. Current plans are to run Doctor Who, Marvel Multiverse, Wizards Staff and Matrons of Mystery. Also hoping to run a session of old school Games Workshop Judge Dredd, and possibly even a bit of Martin's Martian Tripod Race. It's a week of full-on gaming madness, well worth the trip!

Post-Match Report
As a halfling once said, "Well, I'm back.". Back from Hunstanton, that is, after a few days gaming in Searles holiday park, at what continues to be my favourite convention. So, how'd it go?

As is usual, I trundled down the country from Edinburgh with friends and a car full of RPG gubbins. Despite the best efforts of the A1 to divert us all over Yorkshire, we made it down in one piece on Tuesday night and checked into the lodge, went for a sleep, and then it was time to play!

Wednesday was spent as follows:
* Morning Session - I ran Marvel Multiverse, using a slightly simplified version of the rules. My team of X-Men-and-Women gamely fought any manner of monsters, investigated mysteries, and saved Manhattan from being turned into "Dino City".

* Afternoon Session - I played Star Trek Adventures, where my main contribution to the plot was rolling appallingly at a crucial moment, botching my attempt to save the life of one of the other PCs. It wasn't all bad, as that gave the bereaved player a chance to see how easy it is to generate emergency PCs! A good session, though I was suffering from travel-lag, so not my most active participation.

* Evening Session - I ran The Wizard's Staff, the fantasy farce written by the good people at McGuffin & Co. Nonsense fun as usual, though by the end, I was running on fumes, so I opted for a long lie the next morning.

Thursday:
* Afternoon Session - I ran Doctor Who - my "Nowhere Men" adventure. My 4 players picked their PCs from the choice of 5, I strolled off to the loo, remembering as I did that the unselected 5th PC is critical to one bit of the adventure. Oops. Handily, despite my sabotage, the PCs successfully made their way through the scenario anyway. Hoorah!

* Evening Session - I played The Wildsea. A new game to me, with a rules system that seemed intimidating until we started playing, when all became clear(ish). A pretty good session, and a good introduction to how the game works.

Friday:
* Morning Session - I ran Matrons of Mystery, my "Repertory Theatre of Blood" mystery, where my quartet of little old ladies successfully deduced the murderer of a theatrical empresario. I've run better sessions, but it worked well enough - and @MartinP and I have thoughts about tweaking the system to encourage early accusations, which will be interesting to try out.

* Afternoon Session - I played The Great Martian Tripod Race, one of Martin's Victorian Mars scenarios. I've played the scenario before, but that didn't really matter, as the scenario never plays the same way twice. Our plucky team of racers succeeded in getting our broken-down Tripod ready in time for the race, after a bit of vehicular purloining, a touch of forgery, and a spot of museum destruction. Good clean fun.

After taking Friday night off to get some dinner in the local pub, Saturday arrived:

* Morning Session - ran the "Nowhere Men" adventure again. This time, I cunningly arranged that the players would only have 4 PCs to pick from, thus making sure the "critical" PC was picked. Sadly, one player was ill, so I only had 3 players, who duly didn't pick THAT PC either. Yeargh. Handily, they found a different way to solve the mystery of the Nowhere Men. Which was nice.

* Afternoon Session - I played Die. The highlight of the con. The GM warned it would be all about "the feels", and she wasn't wrong. The concept of the game - you play people who are playing a game and end up IN the game (you know, Jumanji, basically) - meant we spent a lot of time building our "normal" characters, but this really paid off when we started playing. I had an absolute blast! We spent ages after the session finished talking about it, which meant I barely had time to wolf down dinner before it was time for-

* Evening Session - I ran Games Workshop's Judge Dredd, the classic "To Live And Die In Mega-City One". My three Judges did a great job of getting through the scenario (which I'd had to trim a bit as it's a BIG adventure!), and I've revised the rules a bit to make it a bit less "bang - missed! bang - missed!" than it used to be.

Sunday:

* Morning Session - the last session of the con, and a chance to play The One Ring - and enjoy Second Breakfast! A nice wee scenario, where our little group of hobbits went in search of, if not adventure, then certainly a bit of exploration. My character was not, it had to be said, good in a fight, but he and the rest of the gang survived to fight and feast another day.

After that, and after winning a prize in the raffle, it was time to head back to Scotland, ready for work the next day. One of these years, I'll remember to take the Monday off.

As ever, a great con, where, after seven years, I suppose I have to consider myself a regular! Roll on 2026.

Late for a post con report but shared what I played and ran at Con-tingency 2025

A big thanks go to the players in my games and the GMs who put up with me in theirs

On Wednesday I ran Ghostbusters where the mobile ghostbusters dealt with a haunted house terrorising a town and went to sort it out - there was an opportunity to remove a ghostbuster out but felt it would be cruel

In the afternoon I played Keep Blowing Up System ran by Phyl - I was interested in what the system though I enjoyed the adventure I realised the system was not for me as it was two random and changed your character concept during play.

Then in the evening I played Wild West Cinema - my real reason for signing up was to determine if the convention was big enough for two western games (for I was running one later) so would there be a shoot out with the gm Duncan. Please to say it was peaceful and enjoyed the system as similar to one I liked plus the adventure.

Thursday I was playing my third game - SLA industries run by a different Duncan. Playing Gawl the stormer I wanted to run into the fights screaming Da-da-da-da-da-da! stormer power!

Then afternoon saw me back to GMing with Tales of the Old West and the players certainly did help through the characters start plotting about when the gold appeared.

The evening was the first of my Bladerunner cases taking inspiration from a real life crime which the RDU searched for a woman and her connect to left luggage of replicant parts

Friday morning I ran the Planet of the Apes adventure. Wasn’t my best as I was running a pregenerated adventure but the players seemed to enjoy it

Friday afternoon was the second Bladerunner case file where the RDU went to the opera and there were some challenging shots.

Pub Friday evening

Saturday morning was my second ghostbusters game where the ghostbusters dealt with a haunted maze. There was a lot more busting of ghosts than my past games

Afternoon I was allowed to play so played Stewpot ran by Paul. It is certainly opposite type of game I normally play or run but it didn’t disappoint.

Evening I was running Alien rpg, I feel I may have to hand in my alien rpg book as I only killed on pc. The rest were killer by another pc leaving them behind

Last game on Sunday I ran Rivers of London when the PCs investigated a haunted dollhouse. It was shorter than most of my games than I expected (just about 3 hours) but the players forgave me.

While it was noisy in the bar area, I did notice many folk were heading to the lodge for their games .

Again, I do enjoy the convention for it gives me the better opportunity to run many of the games I am unable to offer at other conventions
