So.. if I want to try this publishing malarkey, which sources of art do you recommend?

I think it depends a lot on how unusual your topic is. There is a lot of good black & white line art for typical fanasy, horror or SF themes at reasonable prices on DTRPG or Patreon, but as you get more colourful and/or unusual, you have to start looking at commissioned work. That gets expensive fast, so you probably want crowdfunding.

My approach is rather unscientific. I find RPG artists whose work I like, and google them. A lot have Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Deviant accounts, where they usually list Patreons if they have one.

I have found that RPG artists are usually cheaper than others. No-one is in this industry for the money. And of course DTRPG is xheap because it's non-exclusive.

Yeah me too. Then I meet them and we game together using the scenario which they have adorned. Then I hope to work with them again. I think that might be about as unscientific as it gets.
